The Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing has admitted Ms. Lydia Cheung, as Honorary Fellow. Ms. Cheung was the first Nursing Director in Hong Kong back in the 1980’s. She studied in a US School of Nursing in Guangzhou during the world war period (1944-48). Upon graduation, Ms.Cheung started nursing in QMH as an auxiliary nurse in 1949 and retired as Nursing Director of the Medical & Health Department in 1987. She worked her way up from getting the nursing registration, followed by midwifery training, then administration after her extensive clinical practice in Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), Kowloon Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Tsan Yuk Hospital. In early 70’s, shortly after becoming CNO of QMH, she was deployed to head quarter to deal with nurse union issues. Subsequently she had created the Nursing Director and 3 Regional Nursing Officer positions with the regionalization of health care services in Hong Kong. During her services as Nursing Director, Ms. Cheung had commissioned Tuen Mun Hospital and pioneered Nurse Counselor for psychiatric nurses, which subsequently transformed psychiatric nursing education in Hong Kong. After her retirement, Ms. Cheung lives in Canada with frequent visits to Hong Kong. Her aspiration in nursing is proper nursing based with dignity and respect.
