Members of the HKANM are classified into 6 categories:

1. Institutional Members A specialist college of nursing or midwifery recognised by the Council shall be eligible to become an Institutional Member of the Academy.
An Academy College recognized by the Council of HKANM
2. Ordinary Members A registered nurse / registered midwife trained in nursing or midwifery at an institution in Hong Kong accredited at the Nursing Council of Hong Kong or the Midwives Council of Hong Kong, who has completed the courses and training and accumulated experience as prescribed by the Council in writing from time to time, and nominated by an Institutional Member shall be eligible to become an Ordinary Member of the Academy.
3. Fellow Members An Ordinary Member may apply to become a Fellow Member and a Non-Local Ordinary Member may apply to become a Non-Local Fellow Member if such Member :
(i)   has passed examinations conducted by the respective Institutional Members of the Member’s specialty;
(ii)    has fulfilled continuous nursing education, and accumulated sufficient work experience within the Member’s specialty as prescribed by the Council in writing from time to time;
(iii)  has demonstrated significant contributions to nursing or midwifery practice or service development as determined by the Council; and
(iv)  in the case of an Ordinary Member, has an application supported by recommendations from two Fellow Members belonging to the Institutional Member of that Member’s specialty; or
(v)    in the case of a Non-Local Ordinary Member, has an application supported by recommendations from two Fellow or Non-Local Fellow Members (at least one of which must be a Fellow Member) belonging to the Institutional Member of that Member’s specialty.
4. Non-local Ordinary Member A registered nurse / registered midwife or equivalent trained in nursing or midwifery outside Hong Kong, who has completed the courses and training and accumulated experience as prescribed by the Council in writing from time to time, and nominated by an Institutional Member shall be eligible to become a Non-Local Ordinary Member of the Academy.
5. Non-local Fellow Member A registered nurse or registered midwife eligible to become an Ordinary Member of the Academy may apply to become a Fellow Member, and a registered nurse or registered midwife eligible to become a Non-Local Ordinary Member of the Academy may apply to become a Non-Local Fellow Member, if such nurse or midwife has practised for not less than fifteen years and in a specialized branch of nursing or midwifery (as the case may be) for not less than seven years (including the last five years), and makes such application within the designated period determined by the Academy in general meeting from time to time.
6. Honorary Fellow Members Any person whose academic achievement, prominence or contribution to the profession of nursing or midwifery that has been recognised by the Council shall be eligible to become an Honorary Member.
