Dr. Susie Lum commenced her nursing career in Hong Kong.  After several years of clinical nursing, she began to pursue her interest in nursing education.  She was appointed the Senior Nursing Officer (Education)/School Principal in the Nethersole School of Nursing at United Christian Hospital after completed a Diploma in Nursing Education at the Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences in Australia.  In Dr. Lum’s various professional roles, in particular her role as Chief Manager (Nursing) of the Hospital Authority, Dr. Lum had been vigorous in her support of advances in basic and post-graduate nursing education.  Dr. Lum’s professional activities include being advisor and/or member of a number of professional associations. 

In 2003, as a senior nurse executive leading a nursing workforce of over 19,000 in the Hospital authority, Dr. Lum was faced with unprecedented challenges especially during and after the SARS crisis.  With escalating expectations of the public on the healthcare delivery system, coupled with mounting cost pressures, financial constraints, increased responsibility amidst greater complexity and restructuring continually reshape our world.  She accepted the challenge to lead in this highly complex environment, and believe in the need of a deep understanding of the dynamics of organizations, effective communication and close relationship with unions, private and community partners are pertinent and ventured to develop creative approaches to lead nursing and nurses to face future challenges.  In support of CEPA realization even in the health care arena, Dr. Lum had been instrumental in spreading her mission and values among nurses working in China and facilitated the training of specialty nursing targeted for around 600 experienced Guangdong nurses in ten nursing specialties in the four years starting from 2007 and she was the Director of the specialty programs till she retired from HA.  With the strong support of HA management and Officials of the Guangdong Health Department, professional exchanges and the development of nursing specialization in China would be further enhanced.  Since 2002, Dr. Lum has championed with the concerted effort of nurse leaders the established of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing (HKAN) for public and statutory regulation of nursing specialties development to better serve the community.  She was serving as the President of HKAN (former PHKAN) until June 2016 and now the Founding President of the organization.  In May 2013, Dr. Lum was awarded the 44th Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of Red Cross, which recognizes nurses for the exceptional courage and devotion to victims of armed conflict or natural disaster.  It also recognizes exemplary service or a pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education.
